After a delay of several years, the first ship of the US Coast Guard's newest class has been christened. The christening and launching of the first unit of the US Coast Guard (USCG) HERITAGE class took place on 27 October at the Eastern Shipbuilding shipyard in Panama City, Florida. The name of the new class reflects the fact that all units will be named after historic Coast Guard vessels. The trend towards equipping navies with high-performance standard support vessels from the civilian sector is continuing around the globe. After Chile decommissioned its deep-sea tug Lautaro at the beginning of 2022, an adequate replacement had to be found quickly to maintain national connections along the 4000 kilometres of coastline and on to the Antarctic regions and stations of Chile.
