Breathless...

...we are following the annual reviews for 2022. Events in the world have unfolded at a speed that we could not - or did not want to - imagine. With the hope of an imminent end to the pandemic, the desire for good governance in Berlin and a bright future with the rulers in Washington, Paris or Rome, we hoped for stability and the usual economic satisfaction. Putin would not be so serious with his deployment, the US criticism of Nord Stream 2 was exaggerated, the defence budget could be developed moderately, if at all necessary, and we would concentrate on the...

Not on our watch

It is not only since the beginning of the Ukraine war that Germany has claimed leadership in the Baltic Sea. With Deu Marfor, the navy has an important element to achieve this goal. The announcement of the "turning point" on 27 February 2022 by Olaf Scholz in response to the Russian attack on Ukraine is of particular relevance to security policy in many respects. In September 2021, the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle für Schiffe und Marinewaffen, Maritime Technologie und Forschung (WTD 71) took part in the REP(MUS) trials (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping Augmented by Maritime Unmanned Systems) off the Portuguese coast. As part of these trials, investigations were carried out in the areas of underwater communication and mine defence. The future of maritime naval warfare is increasingly based on unmanned systems that operate as autonomously as possible - both above and below water. Particular attention is being paid to...

An export success - fast boats from Damen Shipyards

The "Stan Patrol" design developed by the Dutch Damen Shipyard Group has become a bestseller in various versions. Even the Royal now uses a vehicle of this type for test purposes and the Italian financial police (Guardia di Finanza) recently took delivery of one of the 60-metre units. It is to be the type ship of a new "Bandiera" class. With a diesel-electric hybrid drive, the ships will reach a service speed of 18 knots. The top speed is specified as 26 knots, the sea endurance as up to 15 days and the range as 2000 nautical miles. Access marineforum digital+ Are you already a registered user? Progress is also being made in Stade

The port company Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts) has awarded the contract for the construction of a second jetty for the handling of liquefied natural gas - LNG handling is to start in Stade in winter 2023/2024 in order to strengthen Germany's security of supply with gas. A new port infrastructure and superstructure must be developed in good time for this. NPorts says: "We have been racing against time for six months and have achieved our interim goals. The authorisation for the early start of construction, the financing and now the award procedure have been completed by us in record time. Now the race continues and we are looking forward to rapid progress and...
