Caught out cold

New challenges await the German Navy in the far north. Even China is now emphasising its interests in the region.

While 50 per cent of the Arctic clearly belongs to Russia, China also justifies its claims in the Arctic by claiming to be a "state close to the Arctic". The northernmost city in China is Mohe in Heilongjiang province, directly on the border with Russia, and is therefore around 1450 kilometres from the Arctic Circle as the crow flies. In contrast, the distance from Flensburg to the Arctic Circle is around 1300 kilometres. If you follow the logic of the Chinese Politburo, Germany would also be a state close to the Arctic.
