While territorial security was at the forefront during the Cold War, Germany's global responsibility has moved to the centre of its foreign policy activities since the mid-1990s. As a populous and economically strong country in the centre of Europe, the Federal Republic of Germany continues to bear great responsibility today. Russia's attack on Ukraine, which violated international law, has brought the Bundeswehr's original mission of national and alliance defence back into the focus of our actions - deterrence and defence are once again the central elements. This calls for a sea force that is capable of defence, ready for action and capable of going to war
