The future British Type 31 frigates have been given names. Admiral Tony Radakin, First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, announced on 19 May that the five planned ships will be named Inspiration Class should receive. The units will be Active, Bulldog, Campbeltown, Formidable and Venturer and thus reflect the values and aspirations of the Royal Navy.
The ships, previously known as general purpose frigates, are being built by Babcock and are due to join the navy in 2027. With a length of 139 metres, they will displace 5700 tonnes. As with other navies, the crew will shrink significantly due to automation, with 80 to 100 soldiers currently planned. In addition, up to 60 people can be embarked. The armament includes a 57-millimetre gun and a vertical launch system with up to 24 launch containers.
