German seaports handled more goods last year than in 2023, according to the Federal Statistical Office, with a total of 274 million tonnes handled in 2024 - an increase of 2.3 percent.
Although Hamburg remains the undisputed leader with 97 million tonnes of goods handled, it recorded a decline of 2.6 percent compared to the previous year.
In a comparison of the four largest German seaports, however, the sites in Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven have made significant gains. While Bremerhaven (2nd place) was able to increase its cargo handling by 8.6 percent with a total of 42.5 million tonnes, Wilhelmshaven achieved the best performance. With 34.5 million tonnes and an increase of 15.7 percent, the Jade city landed in third place.
Rostock follows in fourth place with 23.2 million tonnes (- 2.8 percent), followed by Lübeck, Brunsbüttel, Stade and Brake.
