29 September to 2 October 2022 in Bremen and Bremerhaven

Under the patronage of Federal President Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German Maritime Day will be held at the two maritime locations of Bremen and Bremerhaven from 29 September to 2 October in cooperation with the nautical associations, the Federal Association of German Inland Navigation (BDB) and the German Marine Association (DMB). After 1920 and 1959 (Bremen) and 1971 and 1992 (Bremerhaven), this is the first time that the two cities in the state of Bremen have jointly organised the traditional German Shipping Day.

Highlights of the cruise day

It starts in Bremen on 29 September 2022 under the motto "Sustainable shipping: together, clear, clean!", where three high-calibre specialist conferences on the key issues of the future of shipping will kick things off. These events, with the participation of several shipping companies and their associations, leading maritime research institutes, various ports, the German Navy, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and many more, are open to the public free of charge, as the German Shipping Day is intended to provide an opportunity to make shipping and its importance for society and for each and every individual visible. The events are entitled:

  • Freedom of the seas: Sustainable protection of sea routes as the basis for fair global trade and security of supply (Bremen House of Science)
  • Shipping - an environmentally friendly mode of transport (Atlantic Hotel Bremen, Golden Hall)
  • Sustainable harbours: Together, clear, clean! (Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Am Flughafendamm)

The detailed programme and registration details can be found on the German Shipping Day website (www.deutscher-schifffahrtstag.de). In the afternoon at 4.00 pm, the official and also public opening ceremony will take place in St. Peter's Cathedral in Bremen, which will be organised in cooperation with the German and Bremen Seamen's Missions. The ceremony will be accompanied by music from the chamber ensemble of the Münster Air Force Music Corps and the Neustädter Shanty Choir from Bremen. The day will conclude with a Senate reception with the traditional nautical dinner in Bremen Town Hall for guests who have registered in advance.

A very special highlight of the event is a large ship and boat parade on the Weser. On the morning of 30 September, traditional ships, pleasure craft, government and work boats set off from Bremen to Bremerhaven. At the same time, participants in a Weser Cycle Tour will cycle close to the river, where there will be accompanying maritime festivities at various stations, such as in Brake. At the end of the ship and boat parade on the Weser, a broad-based nautical dialogue will take place in Bremerhaven in the early evening.

The German Shipping Day continues on 1 October with a public day in Bremerhaven.

Several of the vessels that took part in the ship and boat parade will be on display there, as well as the Waterways and Shipping Office with its buoy yard, the German Maritime Museum and other maritime facilities. Under the motto: "With bremenports port managementn", the company responsible for the country's ports is also taking part in the programme. The German Maritime Day will be officially concluded on 2 October with a festive church service under the auspices of the German Seamen's Mission Bremerhaven.

Lights off !

However, another previously announced highlight will be cancelled. Following the call of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the intention was to let Bremen and Bremerhaven shine in maritime blue as part of German Shipping Day, which is also World Shipping Day. Many partners and supporters were on board for this, but due to the current political and economic situation, the light naturally remains off.

"Pre-programme" Maritime Week in Bremen

This year, the traditional Maritime Week in Bremen, which will once again offer an extremely entertaining programme, will be held in close cooperation with the German Maritime Day. The programme includes a research mile with experiments, boat tours and open ships, discovery cruises, lectures, maritime career and study information, a boat trip with lights, a maritime market on the Weser promenade Schlachte with a wide range of supply, information and market stalls, and much more. Young and old alike will get their money's worth here and get in the mood for the German Maritime Day in a very special way.

Detailed information on the overall programme, the organisers and partner organisations, the background and objectives of the German Shipping Day and the extensive range of specialist events can be found on the website www.deutscher-schifffahrtstag.de.
