The Kiel-based shipyard German Naval Yards, together with Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH (Düsseldorf) and another partner from the offshore sector, is bidding for the construction of a platform for the disposal of munitions from the Baltic Sea. The jointly developed platform could be deployed as a pilot plant in the Kolberger Heide munitions dumping area at the entrance to the Kiel Fjord before mid-2024 and dispose of conventional munitions such as torpedo heads, mines and artillery shells in an environmentally friendly manner.
According to the latest estimates, 1.6 million tonnes of conventional and 220,000 tonnes of chemical munitions lie at the bottom of the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts. Because these munitions, which were dumped throughout the Baltic Sea during and especially after the Second World War, are increasingly decaying, all sides fear considerable threats to the environment and local residents.
The development partners have made it their mission to contribute to the mammoth task of sustainable, innovative and environmentally friendly disposal of the legacy of war with their project. With the initial experience of conventional ammunition disposal, the platform is to be further developed for the disposal of chemical ammunition. All processes on board the platform are supported from land: The shipyard provides logistical and technical support in a control centre on its premises.
