In the presence of Defence Minister Ajay Kumar, the Indian Coast Guard took delivery of the first three ALH Mk-III helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). A total of 16 of the twin-engine machines with modern avionics and electronics were ordered. The Mk-III is an Indian in-house development with which the country is endeavouring to become more independent of foreign countries in the technology sector. The light helicopter flies in the 5.5 tonne class and is certified for military operations. The first ALHs of an older version were delivered back in 2001, with 228 units delivered by 2017. The largest customer is the Indian armed forces, which had 216 units in operation in the same year.
With a length of 15.9 metres, the ALH Mk-III can accommodate up to twelve passengers and two pilots. It has a maximum speed of 292 kilometres per hour and a range of 630 kilometres. It can stay in the air for more than three and a half hours.
