Indian Navy: The rising naval power of the subcontinent

The Indian navy is at the beginning of a far-reaching expansion and modernisation of its fleet. If all projects are realised, India could be one of the leading naval powers by the middle of the century.

The Indian Navy currently has around 280 units, including around 70 ocean-going warships, including submarines and corvettes. New Delhi plans to almost double the size of its fleet by 2050. More than 30 different classes of ships and boats are either under construction or in the planning stage. The first units from the current modernisation phase have already entered service with the fleet.
