Inland waterways - when canals freeze over

Since 7 February 2026, the last remaining navigable section between Hanover-Anderten in Lower Saxony and the Minden waterway junction in North Rhine-Westphalia has also been closed. According to the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), persistent frost has disrupted shipping on central sections of the waterway. Inland waterways effectively brought to a standstill. This means that a significant part of inland logistics in northern Germany has come to a standstill.
