The Peene shipyard in Wolgast was awarded the Innovation and Technology Prize 2025 by the Fraunhofer Institute for Large Structures in Production Technology (IGP) on 26 February. The award recognises the collaboration in the development of a „seeing robot“ for special shipbuilding. The welding system was realised with the Fraunhofer IGP. The system works on the basis of modern 3D sensor data and generates production programmes independently of conventional design data. The aim of the co-operation is to develop automated and economically efficient welding technologies for maritime one-off production. By using innovative 3D sensor technology and intelligent scanning strategies, component geometries can be precisely recorded and custom-fit welding programmes generated. The Fraunhofer IGP Innovation and Technology Award has been presented annually since 2018 for outstanding achievements in production technology and emphasises the technological, economic and social added value of close cooperation between research and industry.
