Isaac Peral swims again

After its first planned time in dry dock, the Isaac Peral now again. In recent weeks, Navantia has completed various tasks on the new Spanish submarine, including the installation of the periscope and the commissioning of the consoles for the command and weapon deployment system in the operations centre. This week, the consoles will receive the necessary software after the required tests have been completed at Sistemas San Fernando.
Over the coming months, the first S-80 plus class boat will remain with Navantia and be further equipped. Before the sea trials scheduled for the beginning of 2022, the Isaac Peral once again in dry dock. Sea trials will then begin in the first quarter. So far, the shipyard and navy are still planning to put the conventionally powered boat into service in the first quarter of 2023.

The Spanish are breaking new ground with the S-80 class submarines, as the units were designed and built solely with national funds. The programme, which is currently worth almost four billion euros, will comprise four boats that will join the Armada by 2029. They will displace 3200 tonnes when surfaced and are 81 metres long. While the Isaac Peral is still purely conventionally powered, future boats will be equipped with an air-independent propulsion system. This will be retrofitted to the initially completed units during the later shipyard laytime. The modern boats should be able to dive to a depth of 460 metres. A crew of 32 will be responsible for the use of torpedoes and sub-harpoons.
