The type ship is the "Al Zubarah", which is also the namesake of the class that Qatar ordered from the Italian shipbuilder in 2016 as part of the national naval procurement programme. The order is worth around four billion euros. The delivery has now taken place at the shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia). The "Al Zubarah" class corvettes should be able to fulfil a wide range of tasks, from maritime surveillance to sea rescue. This is more the shipyard's description of a rather defensive operational spectrum for a combat ship. They are 107 metres long and 14.70 metres wide and are equipped with a combined diesel and diesel power plant (CODAD). The maximum speed is expected to reach 28 knots. There is accommodation for 112 people on board. The corvettes will also be able to launch speedboats via side and aft launching devices. The "Damsah" was the last ship in the series to be launched and the "Sumaysimah" was laid down.

The Qatar Navy (Qatar Emiri Navy) has a personnel strength of 1,800 men. In addition to eight speedboats, including the French Cobattante III, the navy has fourteen guard boats for police duties and one landing ship. With the four corvettes on order, which could almost be called frigates, the QEN is taking a new approach. In the next few years, a batch of 2 OPVs will be added. We will then have very modern units for the maritime defence of the Football World Cup. With a gross domestic product of 184 billion US dollars and a population of 3 million, the absolute monarchy of Qatar is indeed financially strong.

In a previous version, the number of corvettes was wrong: there are four, not seven.
