Joe Biden nominates first woman to the rank of 4-star admiral

Admiral Karl L. Schultz, the commandant of the Coast Guard, said in the statement that Fagan was "an outstanding supervisor with 36 years of operational experience" in the Coast Guard, and also had outstanding policy and interagency knowledge.

In her current position, Fagan is responsible for Coast Guard operations from the Rocky Mountains to the east coast of Africa. Under Fagan's leadership, the USCG has expanded its presence in the Western Pacific in the face of growing threats from China and North Korea. During Fagan's tenure, the Coast Guard began deploying its newest units ("Fast Response Cutters") to Guam to curb illegal Chinese fishing in the region.

  1. Admiral Charles W. Ray assumed duties as the 31st Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard on 24 May 2018. As Vice Commandant and Chief Operating Officer, Admiral Ray executes the strategic intent of the Commandant, manages internal organisational governance and serves as the Component Acquisition Executive.
Vice Admiral Linda F. Fagan is therefore likely to become the 32nd Vice Commander

    • A small clarification: Linda F. Fagan is the first female **** admiral in the U.S. Coast Guard. Michelle J. Howard received this rank in the U.S. Navy back in 2016.
