Kiel minehunter joins the NATO organisation

New support for NATO: The minehunting boat "Dillingen" in action

The minehunting vessel "Dillingen" will set sail on Tuesday 8 July to join the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG 1) for the next six months. Under the command of Corvette Captain Finn Fritz, the crew of the "Dillingen" will become part of one of NATO's four standing maritime formations. The 43 men and women of the crew have challenging months ahead of them. After months of preparation, the commander is very confident: "My crew already has experience of operating as part of an international organisation, which is now part of our self-image. It's also part of the appeal of our job. Getting to know new people, visiting new harbours, but also learning how other NATO navies work and function."

NATO's maritime task forces, together with air and land forces and special forces, form NATO's rapid reaction forces, an instrument for rapid threat and crisis response. The units in these formations have completed a training programme lasting several months and have a high level of equipment and training.

SNMCMG 1 operates year-round, primarily in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and neighbouring sea areas. The unit is tasked with being ready for deployment at sea and training the entire spectrum of mine warfare. In addition to manoeuvres and training, the boats also secure the sea routes through presence and mine defence and are also deployed for Historic Ordnance Disposal Operations (HOD) or the removal of contaminated sites in the North and Baltic Seas. In doing so, they identify or remove sea mines, torpedoes and bombs from the world wars or the Cold War, which still pose a threat to local people and shipping today.
