Traditional ships are the maritime centrepiece of every sailing event, such as Kiel Week. They keep tradition alive and bring it to life. Now, however, a traditional sailing ship anchored in the Kiel Fjord and inspected by the water police is said to have discharged around 1,000 litres of faeces (black water) into the Baltic Sea. According to the report, the police noticed inconsistencies in the documentation - in the so-called "waste diary" - which "confirmed the suspicion that unauthorised wastewater had been discharged into the Baltic Sea". The owner of the ship is being investigated. The police have not revealed exactly which traditional sailing vessel was involved. If the suspicion is confirmed, a fine of up to 50,000 euros could be imposed.
The Baltic Sea is designated by the IMO as a special area in which the discharge of untreated ship sewage is generally prohibited in accordance with Annex IV of the MARPOL Convention. The associated strict discharge limits also apply to pleasure craft and traditional sailing boats.
