Gas importer Uniper is expecting the special ship "Hoegh Esperanza" as the technical centrepiece for the new LNG land terminal in Wilhelmshaven in mid-December, according to a company spokesperson in Düsseldorf last week.
FSRU
The 294 metre long "Hoegh Esperanza" will serve as a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Wilhelmshaven. LNG delivered in liquid form will be converted back into gas on board and pumped ashore. Uniper announced last week that the ship's cargo, which is still on board, could be used to feed natural gas into the German grid before the end of the year. The first LNG tanker is scheduled to call at the terminal in Wilhelmshaven in mid-January and go alongside the "Hoegh Esperanza". The terminal was built by Uniper with the support of the German government - and Uniper will continue to operate it.
We already reported here on 29 November about the FSRU "Neptune" arriving in Lubmin - however, the large LNG tankers have to remain in the roadstead and are dependent on a tank shuttle.
Opening of the terminal
The plant is part of Germany's efforts to become independent of Russian natural gas. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens), Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) and Lower Saxony's Head of Government Stephan Weil (SPD) are expected to attend the official commissioning on 17 December.
