Efficient ship operations are a decisive lever for more climate-friendly shipping. For this reason, the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (MCN), in collaboration with industry experts, has developed a comprehensive English-language guide to ship efficiency, which is available in an updated version just in time for the start of SMM Hamburg, the world's leading trade fair for the maritime industry.
The aim of the guide is to provide an overview of existing regulations in international maritime shipping and to highlight technical options for decarbonisation and improving ship efficiency and to assess their impact. The technologies are relevant for both newbuildings and existing ships. An extensive chapter is also devoted to marine fuels.
New features are:
- The FuelEU Maritime Regulations, which will come into force from January 2025, are addressed for the first time in the guide. They aim to reduce the shipping industry's greenhouse gas emissions.
- The topic of carbon (dioxide) capture has been added. It is important for ship efficiency as it helps to reduce emissions and supports compliance with stricter emissions regulations.
- A new chapter describes the developments in ship design over the past two decades.
- The Performance Monitoring chapter has also been added.
- The assessment matrix for maritime fuels has been revised.
- Due to the continuously growing market for new technologies to increase efficiency in ship operation, further technical solutions have been included in the guide.
