Number two is coming

In a few days, the Russian Navy will have one more submarine. On 7 May, the Kazan was put into service at an official ceremony. This was preceded by extensive tests of the new nuclear submarine, which were apparently completed successfully. The CEO of the Sevmash shipyard, Mikhail Budnichenko, and the chairman of the state acceptance commission, Captain Alexei Poteshkin, signed the acceptance certificate on 5 May.
At the commissioning ceremony scheduled for Friday, the Russian naval flag will be raised for the first time in the presence of Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, the head of the navy. Other participants include representatives of regional and local politics and the United Shipbuilding Corporation.

The Russian Navy's soon to be newest submarine bears the identification K 561 and is part of project 885. 133 metres long, these boats displace 9500 tonnes when surfaced and 11 800 tonnes when submerged. They are powered by a combination of the pressurised water reactor type OK-650W with 195 MW and two GT3A turbines with 43,000 HP. Their maximum diving depth is estimated at 500 metres, with a maximum speed of 28 knots. The crew includes 90 soldiers. The ships, which are also known as Jasen-M The boats are known for their eight torpedo tubes and eight launch modules for up to 24 Oniks or Kalibr cruise missiles. Alternatively, the Granat or Kalibr anti-ship missiles can also be fired.
The ship class designed by the Leningrad engineering office Malachit has been under construction since 1993. The type ship, the Severodvinskwas laid in 1993, but due to financial problems and the temporary suspension of work, it was only able to start operations in 2014. With the new Kazan will now be only the second ship in the Jasen-class will join the fleet. A further seven are to follow in the next few years, six of which are already under construction.
