For the first time, the US Navy handed over an aircraft carrier battle group to NATO. In doing so, the alliance demonstrated its ability to react quickly and flexibly to challenges.

In Germany, talk of naval power quickly conjures up images from the 19th and 20th centuries. Nowadays, however, the concept can no longer be limited to a large fleet and "strategic naval positions", i.e. favourably located bases overseas.

By contrast, NATO demonstrated what naval power in the 21st century actually means at the beginning of the year: the alliance carried out the Neptune Strike 2022 exercise for a fortnight. A total of 28 nations took part. The theatre of operations was the central Mediterranean and Central and South-Eastern Europe.

At the centre of Neptune Strike was the transfer of operational control of a US Navy aircraft carrier strike force to NATO - an unprecedented process. What may initially sound like formalism requires a high degree of organisation in practice and also has considerable military strategic significance. This was particularly evident in the media discussions surrounding Neptune Strike 22:
