rheinmetall: MASS decoy system for Australian Navy

From a Rheinmetall press release

The Royal Australian Navy has ordered MASS (Multi Ammunition Softkill System) ship protection systems from Rheinmetall for its three Hobart-class destroyers and ten Anzac-class frigates. According to Rheinmetall, the first systems are to be delivered this year and full operational readiness will be achieved in 2027. The order, with a volume of 125 million euros, is the largest to date for the company's Maritime Defence Systems division. The contract includes options to equip the entire Australian fleet, which could increase the volume fivefold.

Rheinmetall in Australia

The order is the first naval contract of its kind that Rheinmetall has received in Australia and represents a significant milestone in the expansion of its industrial presence in Australia. Through technology transfer, Rheinmetall Defence Australia will be able to manufacture the system under licence on the fifth continent, install it on board seagoing units and commission it locally. Australia is the sixteenth user state.

Decoy system

According to Rheinmetall's description, the MASS ship protection system protects ships and boats from a wide range of threats (e.g. from attacks with anti-ship missiles or LASER-guided weapons) - on the high seas as well as in coastal waters or on rivers. Protection is guaranteed in all relevant wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. MASS can be installed on ships of any size. It can be integrated into existing command and weapon deployment systems with little effort or operated as a stand-alone system. As standard, MASS consists of one to six directional launchers, each of which can fire 32 so-called Omni Trap decoy ammunition.

We trust that

The German Navy currently uses 50 MASS launchers to protect its ships. The frigates F123, F124, F125, the corvettes K130 and the Frankenthal-class minehunters are equipped with them.
