Russia - fifth Gorshkov frigate launched

In mid-August, the fifth Admiral Gorshkov-class frigate (project 22350, 135 metres, 5,400 tonnes) was christened "Admiral Amelko" and launched at the Severnaya Verf (Northen Shipyard) in Saint Petersburg in the presence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Federation Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev. While the "Amelko" and the "Admiral Isakov", which was launched a year ago, are intended for the Pacific fleet, the three sister ships "Gorshkov", "Kasatonov" and "Golovko" have been in service in the Northern Fleet since 2018, 2020 and 2023. Three further units are in various stages of construction on the shipyard's helms. Due to the halt in the supply of Ukrainian gas turbines after 2014, the first three units in the class took up to twelve years from keel laying to entry into service. This knot should have been untied with the installation of Russian propulsion systems. However, long construction times have led to technical developments in the initially scaffolded weapon systems that require modification of the subsequent construction batches. In particular, this concerns the vertical launch silo for the main armament, which has been enlarged to 24 or 32 containers. The "Amelko" is still missing parts of the superstructure and the integral mast - how many other system innovations will ultimately be scaffolded will only become apparent upon delivery. Date uncertain. However, work is already underway on the 22350M project - as a successor model with a displacement of 8,000 tonnes (American Arleigh Burke calibre). And on destroyers with up to 14,000 tonnes - like the Chinese Renhai class. Date certainly very uncertain.
