Russian landing ship christened in Kaliningrad

At the end of May, the large landing ship "Vladimir Andreyev" was christened in Kaliningrad at the Yantar shipyard as type ship project 11711M in the presence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev. It is a further development of the Ivan Gren class, known for its striking silhouette with the sweeping bow and aft island.

The new landing ship now resembles the traditional dock landing ships of the American Whidbey class (186 metres, 16,000 tonnes) or the Chinese Yuzhao class (210 metres, 20,000 tonnes), but with a length of 150 metres and a displacement of around 8,000 tonnes, it is significantly smaller than these. However, as it is 20% larger overall than the "Ivan Gren" and "Pyotr Morgunov", the ship can land a combat unit of 40 vehicles and 400 soldiers via six Serna-type landing craft and up to five on-board helicopters with correspondingly larger areas on and below deck. With four engines, the ship is not faster (18 knots), but it is more manoeuvrable. More and larger weapon stations take account of the increased threat from the air. The Vladimir Andreyev is scheduled to enter service with the Pacific Fleet in 2026 - its sister ship "Vasily Trushin", which was laid down at the same time at the Yantar shipyard, is still under construction. Following the loss of landing capacity in the Black Sea, the 11711M project is expected to continue.
