Saxony in the Baltic Sea

The 2nd frigate Sachsen (F 219) moved through the Kiel Canal into the Baltic Sea on Monday night. The unit, which is part of the 2nd Frigate Squadron, was due to take part in the SAGA in Neustadt from Tuesday.

Due to four positive COVID-19 cases on board the frigate, the ship made an unscheduled call at the naval base in Kiel early Tuesday afternoon to disembark and isolate the affected soldiers. All contact persons were isolated and the entire crew was tested. The training programme at sea is to be continued at the start of the new week.

The frigate Sachsen has been undergoing shipyard trials since the beginning of the year and began building up its operational capability a week ago. To this end, the ship is undergoing various training programmes, taking part in exercises and manoeuvres and will be certified by GOST at the end. These projects will take up the next five months.
