Scrubbers are not environmental angels

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have discovered that the wash water from exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) on ships is the main cause of environmental pollution in harbour areas. Although the environmentally hazardous metals and other toxic substances washed out of the exhaust gas are no longer released into the atmosphere, they are released into the water, including harbour waters.

Every ship is responsible for different types of pollutant discharges. These include grey water from showers, black water from toilets, antifouling paints and exhaust fumes from ship propulsion systems.

Standards

In order to meet the requirements in the European Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECA) and the requirements introduced by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 2020, scrubbers are an approved option in addition to switching to low-sulphur fuel. Scrubbers also allow shipowners to continue using heavy fuel oil instead of investing in higher-quality, low-sulphur fuels and environmentally friendly propulsion technologies.
