The sailing training ship Juan Sebastian Elcano returned to its home port of Cadiz in mid-June from its 93rd training voyage abroad and eleventh circumnavigation. Due to the worsening coronavirus situation in the country, the ship arrived a month earlier than planned. As a traditional welcome to the crew, the Spanish King Felipe VI spent the last night on board before entering the harbour - at anchor in the Gulf of Cadiz. For ten months, the crew (200) and cadet crew (20) worked and lived exclusively on board the four-masted square-rigged schooner, as no shore leave was allowed due to the strictest precautionary measures against infection with the virus. However, the first vaccinations were not carried out until the end of May on Crete. But they were accompanied in the belly of the ship by two media botasThese 250-litre wooden barrels for sherry, which are said to have given the Amontillado the best possible ripeness when rocked around the world the old-fashioned way - something the ancient Greeks already knew and the Spaniards rediscovered 500 years ago as if by chance in their travel provisions. After the crew members were able to greet their families on the pier, these barrels travelled overland back to Bodega González Byass in Jerez, where the commander and bodega president tasted the exceptional result before the sherry was allowed to be bottled. The product christened Estrella de los Mares is therefore also a training success!
