The world's largest shipping company, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), based in Geneva, has made a name for itself in the past not only by acquiring a stake in the Hamburg port logistics company HHLA, but most recently also as a buyer of container ships, both worldwide and in Germany.
The previous fleet leader, Germany, was relegated to third place, as the President of the Association of German Shipowners (VDR) announced in Hamburg. Switzerland is now followed by China.
The decisive factor is the dimensionless gross tonnage (GT) of the container ships travelling under national control.
1. with 34.7 million GT - Switzerland
2. with 31.0 million GT - China
3. with 30.2 million GT - Germany
The title is now held by an Alpine country that doesn't even have access to the sea. Chapeau!
