After Ukrainian surface drones had already managed to take out a combat helicopter before the turn of the year, two further successes followed at the beginning of May: a Su-30 Flanker fighter jet was hit first, followed shortly afterwards by a second. We waited a long time for images of the new drone type Magura V7a further development of the well-known Magura platform - has now been released by the Ukrainian side with obvious pride.
The V7 is similar to the previous Magura V5 in many features, is with around eight metres long however about one and a half times larger than the predecessor model. The latter was specially designed for direct hits by ramming attacks on sea targets. It was initially assumed that the armament was based on existing AA-11 Archer (R-73) from Soviet stocks - an infrared-guided short-range air-to-air projectile. This may also have been the case for an early prototype.
However, the images now published clearly show the Magura V7's equipment with AIM-9 Sidewinder missilesmounted on launch rails for aeroplanes, attached to the upper deck of the drone. Which missile was ultimately used is of secondary importance - the decisive factor is the effect: a fighter bomber fleeing from a Magura drone after a cannon attack has long since become a target. A helicopter anyway.
