The Greek Navy has taken delivery of the first refurbished S-70B helicopter. The US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt, Chief of Staff Konstantinos Floros and Chief of Naval Staff Stylianos Petrakis travelled to Greece for the small ceremony. The eleven aircraft of this type are undergoing extensive maintenance and modernisation work at Aeroservices. Work has already begun on the second unit.
The version of the American SH-60 Sea Hawk modified for Greece is known as the Aegean Hawk. It has two engines and the main rotor has four rotor blades. The S-70B is equipped with dipping sonar and can be fitted with up to three Mk 46 torpedoes, a Penguin anti-ship missile or four Hellfire air-to-ground missiles. The SH-60 made its maiden flight at the end of 1979 and has since been successfully deployed by a large number of nations, including Australia, Japan, Spain and Turkey. Since its introduction in 1995, the Greek Navy has completed more than 35,000 flight hours with these systems.
