The Canadian defence initiative "Our North - Strong and Free" includes the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), on the basis of which up to twelve submarines are to be built for the Royal Canadian Navy to replace the Victoria class from the mid-1930s. A year ago, the Canadian Procurement Agency launched a request for information to sound out possible offers and co-operations. Ottawa announced at the end of August that the German shipbuilder TKMS and the Korean company Hanwha Ocean Co had been filtered out of the 25 responses as potential partners. TKMS offers the 212CD submarines, which are being procured by Germany together with Norway. A corresponding "trilateral strategic maritime partnership" focussing on securing the Sea Lines of Communication (SLOC) in the North Atlantic and the Arctic has met with political approval on this side of the Atlantic - although this traditional term encompasses more than ever the cables that secure the underwater connections between nations. What are we waiting for?
