"Only the highest standards are good enough!"

Interview with the commander of the frigate HESSEN by Holger Schlüter. There are many questions following the end of the explosive deployment of the frigate HESSEN in the Red Sea. Not all of them can be answered by the ship's commander, frigate captain Volker Kübsch, and after all, military security also demands secrecy. The German public must accept that there are limits to transparency, even for their own safety. The findings are now being extensively analysed, both technically, tactically and in terms of personnel. The man most in demand during the operation was nevertheless available to marineforum. Mr Kübsch, our deep respect for you and your crew! How many interviews have you already given...

Suez Canal - Revenue down

Since merchant ships in the Red Sea have been repeatedly attacked by the Yemeni Houthi militia, demonstrating their support for the militant Palestinian Hamas in their fight against Israel, the number of ship passages has fallen from 25,911 in the 2022/2023 financial year to 20,148 in 2023/2024, according to the head of the Egyptian Canal Authority. Red Sea: Damaged submarine cables are being repaired

More than a dozen underwater cables have been laid through the Red Sea. At least three of them were probably severed by the anchor of a cargo ship attacked by the Houthi militias. On 18 February 2024, two anti-ship missiles were fired at the bulk carrier "Rubymar" (171 metres, 19,000 tonnes), one of which hit the ship and caused severe damage. The ship sank on 2 March. Decarbonisation of the navy

Environmental protection is a high priority for major shipping companies for a variety of reasons. But will alternative fuels also play a role in the world's navies in the future? While the effects of human activity on the climate are increasingly becoming the focus of attention around the world, the classification society DNV Maritime (Det Norske Veritas, formerly Germanischer Lloyd), like many other companies in the shipping industry, is researching and using alternative fuels. The aim is to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in this sector. However, technical innovations in the shipping industry take time and are not linear, as history shows. It...
