Russia: Frigate shoots down Ukrainian drone

The Russian Ministry of Defence announced yesterday (12 April 2022) that the Grigorovich-class frigate "Admiral Essen" (Project 11356) had shot down a Ukrainian "Bayraktar" drone with its "Shtil" anti-aircraft missiles off the west coast of the island of Crimea. The navalised SA-N-7C/Gollum belongs to the Russian armed forces' family of medium-range Buk air defence missiles. It is mounted in 12-bay vertical silos on the newer units of the Russian Navy. Black Sea Fleet frigates The four Grigorovich frigates built to date (six were planned) were built and equipped at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad (Königsberg) in the Russian exclave between Lithuania and Poland from 2010 to 2018. Spain's navy with a new name

The "Armada Española" is passé! The Spanish navy has been called the "Armada Española" since Franco's time, no "Real" before that, because back then the Generalissimo ruled - and the king was far behind. Before that it was called "Marina Española" (after restructuring in the early 1900s), and before that also "Marina de Guerra" (sometime in the 19th century). But for what feels like an eternity and various catastrophic defeats before that, it was called the "Armada" - or the "Invincible" when things were going well. Now the national name "Española" is to be dropped and the Spanish naval forces will be known simply as the "Armada". This will apply from 15 March 2022 and...

Last corvette for the German Navy?

On 15 March 2022, construction number 10 of the Braunschweig class was laid down in Wolgast. The future "Lübeck" is the last (?) unit of the second batch of Class 130 for the German Navy for the time being. According to the current armaments report, corvettes 6 to 8 are being fitted out in Hamburg. Construction number 9, the corvette "Augsburg", is still in the production phase. In terms of shipbuilding, the boats are on schedule. Delivery of the first of the second batch, corvette "Köln" (F265), is expected in 2023, nine months later than planned when the order was placed in September 2017. The delivery of all ships should be completed by 2025.

Ukraine has sunk its flagship in the harbour

A short message and the sad picture of a half-sunken frigate dated 3 March 2022 are seen as proof that the Ukrainian navy sank its flagship "Hetman Sagaidachny" itself. The Ukrainian defence minister has apparently confirmed this action. The 3,500-tonne Krivak III-class ship was originally built at a shipyard in Kerch on the east coast of the island of Crimea as the last of the eight Krivaks intended for the Soviet coast guard and was put into Ukrainian service in 1993. The 30-year-old frigate was undergoing repairs in one of the three large shipyards in the harbour city of Mykolaiv,...

Poland: Decision in the Miecznik project

Babcock's Arrowhead 140 was awarded the contract in the Polish frigate procurement programme Projekt Miecznik. This was announced by the Polish Ministry of Defence via twitter on 4 March 2022. The consortium responsible for the construction, led by the holding Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), announced that "strategic cooperation agreements" had been concluded with Babcock and British branches of Thales and MBDA. PGZ added that the signing of the contract "begins the phase of preparation for production under the programme to acquire three multi-purpose frigates for the Polish Navy". Poland initially wants to build just one frigate from 2023. After commissioning in 2028, the concept is to be...
