Frigate "Hessen" joins US carrier organisation

Today, on 5 September 2022, the frigate "Hessen" is leaving its home port to join the US Carrier Strike Group (CSG) under the command of Frigate Captain Volker Kübsch. Together with the American aircraft carrier "USS Gerald R. Ford", the German frigate will primarily operate within the air defence unit and is an integral part of the aircraft carrier group. Operational cooperation focuses on operational training and practising threat scenarios. Cooperation with the US Navy is already a long-standing tradition for Class 124, beginning in 2009 when the "Hessen" practised with the "USS Dwight D. Eisenhower" off the east coast of the USA. In 2010, the "Hessen" was part of the...

Kongsberg controllable pitch propeller for F126

The new F126 frigates of the German Navy will receive controllable pitch propeller systems with the corresponding hubs, blades, hub covers and propeller shafts from Kongsberg. The company has announced that the general contractor for the construction of the frigate, Damen Naval, has commissioned Kongsberg to supply four sets of controllable pitch propeller systems. The propeller/propeller shaft system is the successful result of close co-operation between Damen Naval, Kongsberg Maritime, the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute and the classification society, according to Kongsberg. Controllable pitch propellers enable sailing speeds (forward and reverse) independent of the engine speed and improve the manoeuvrability of the ship. The propulsion system has a simpler design, while the propeller itself is more complicated. As Kongsberg writes, the four ships...

Ukrainian southern offensive exploits weaknesses in the Russian navy

Following the strengthening of Ukrainian coastal defences in the north-west quadrant of the Black Sea in recent weeks, the southern offensive just launched by the Ukrainian armed forces could promise success, as Russia is clearly no longer in a position to control and "hold down" this coastal section from the sea. On the contrary: Ukraine has shown with individual steps that it can certainly disrupt the enemy forces around Sevastopol with targeted attacks in such a way that the Russian navy can only move safely in the area of the coastal defence of Crimea. Seen on the timeline The damage to and sinking of the "Moskva" on 14 April...

Russian navy off the English coast.

A Russian convoy consisting of the cruiser "Marshal Ustinov" (Slava class, project 1164, sister ship of the "Moskva"), the destroyer "Vice Admiral Kulakov" (Udaloy class type ship, project 1155) and the tanker "Vyazma" (Kaliningradneft class) is reportedly on a transfer from the Mediterranean back to the Northern Fleet and its home ports on the Barents Sea. The convoy, which also included the frigate "Admiral Kasatonov" (Gorshkov class, project 22350), had moved southwards past Ireland to the vicinity of the feared war region in January before the start of the Ukraine war and had been in the Mediterranean after the Bosporus was closed - and will now probably have to return to its home ports in the...
