Russia continues to rejuvenate its "Kilo" fleet

The rejuvenation of the Russian Federation's conventional diesel-electric submarines is slowly nearing completion. The Kilo class (project 877/636) already comprises 24 boats with a fairly equal distribution across the three fleets, with the first boats already looking back on forty years of service. At the end of October, the "Wolkow", the second boat of the third batch (Project 636.3), a series of six units destined for the Pacific Fleet, was handed over to the Far Eastern command. The boats are being built by the United Shipbuilding Corporation, an offshoot of Admiralty Shipyards in St Petersburg. While the second boat took well over three years to build and test, the second...

Farewell for months

On 7 January, the tender WERRA set course for the eastern Mediterranean to relieve the frigate BRANDENBURG as the flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG 2). The seventy or so crew members had already been in the currently prescribed quarantine for days. And so the men and women had long since said goodbye to their families and friends on the day of departure. No infections with the coronavirus had previously been detected. The...

On the way to operational readiness

After the Breguet Atlantic was discontinued, the German Navy opted for second-hand P-3Cs from the Dutch. France, on the other hand, decided to develop its own successor, the Atlantic 2. Also known as the Atlantic Nouvelle Generation (ANG), these maritime patrol aircraft differed from their predecessors only in the details. However, after 20 years in service, the technical equipment was no longer up to date and the decision was made to upgrade in 1993. Just under two years ago, the first of the converted aircraft rejoined the fleet. On the way to their planned retirement at the end of 2021...
