News from the Panama Canal - persistent drought exacerbates transit traffic

The approximately 80-kilometre-long Panama Canal will remain a bottleneck for the foreseeable future The important trade route for transporting goods from Asia to the east coast of the USA passes around 14,000 ships per year in normal times; over five percent of global trade, over half a billion tonnes of freight annually. But because it rains so little, the water level is falling. At minus 41%, the recorded precipitation for October is the lowest since 1950. 2023 is also the second driest year in the same period. System with "conveyor belt" shortens rescue time at sea

LONDON - A new rescue system "pulls" a person who has fallen overboard safely out of the water in less than a minute. During the rescue of a dummy in the harbour, it was demonstrated that the patented "Swift Rescue Conveyer System" from ZELIM works like a conveyor belt and rescues people who have fallen overboard up to four times faster than conventional systems, such as a rescue gallows. During a three-day demonstration around Vattenfall's Ramsgate offshore wind farm off the Thames estuary, offshore search and rescue specialists showed that once the "person overboard" role has been triggered, the Swift rescue device can be lowered into the water remotely and people quickly brought back on board to safety...

Update: Change of leadership at the US Navy now official

President Joe Biden had already nominated Franchetti for this position in July. In the USA, however, such appointments still have to be confirmed by the Senate. One of the senators, Republican Tommy Tuberville, has been blocking hundreds of military nominations for some time in protest against a Department of Defence regulation that allows female soldiers to be reimbursed for travel expenses in the event of an abortion. Unanimity is required for many formal procedures in the US Senate. Therefore, even a single member of the Senate can become a "show-stopper".
The confirmation now took place as a single vote on 2 November 2023, after the Republicans last week publicly broke with Senator Tommy Tuberville (Alabama), who has been blocking the 'en bloc appointments' of generals and admirals in the Senate for nine months.
