Breaking sanctions under a false flag - illegal Russian tankers are a maritime nightmare

Under the title "Ships Are Flying False Flags to Dodge Sanctions", an article by columnist Elisabeth Braw appeared in Foreign Policy magazine on 30 January 2023, the most important statements of which are summarised here. Ownership - register - flag Elisabeth Braw begins by stating that ship ownership in the world is unevenly distributed among countries: the three countries with the largest shipping companies are China, Greece and Japan. But none of these countries are among the top countries under whose flags all these ships actually sail! Even the fourth-placed United States and fifth-placed Germany are not among them. Flag of...

Havariekommando: Good to know that it works!

When something goes wrong in the German Bight, the German Bight Traffic Centre is the first to know - and if the situation becomes really dramatic, it asks the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies in Cuxhaven to take over overall control of a particular emergency. This is what happened last Tuesday, 31 January 2023, when the crew of the multipurpose freighter "Royal II", en route from Esbjerg to Cuxhaven with a cargo of wind turbine parts, reported an engine failure off Heligoland at 16:30 and the anchors would not hold in the storm. The "Royal II" (length: 132 m; width: 21 m; flag: Panama) was drifting at low speed with two anchors deployed....
