Since merchant ships in the Red Sea have been repeatedly attacked by the Yemeni Houthi militia, demonstrating their support for the militant Palestinian Hamas in their fight against Israel, the number of ship passages has fallen from 25,911 in the 2022/2023 financial year to 20,148 in 2023/2024, according to the head of the Egyptian Canal Authority. A video was recorded from the M/V "Pumba" in the Red Sea showing how an attack by a drone boat loaded with explosives (USV - unmanned surface vehicle) was repelled. The armed security team deployed on board the "Pumba" opened fire on the USV, causing it to explode at a sufficient distance from the stern. More than a dozen underwater cables have been laid through the Red Sea. At least three of them were probably severed by the anchor of a cargo ship attacked by the Houthi militias. On 18 February 2024, two anti-ship missiles were fired at the bulk carrier "Rubymar" (171 metres, 19,000 tonnes), one of which hit the ship and caused severe damage. The ship sank on 2 March. The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) has been realising the rescue of human lives from distress at sea and dangerous situations in the German areas of the North Sea and Baltic Sea for 159 years. "Maritime Rescue Day" is held once a year on the last Sunday in July and each participating station offered its own programme on 28.07.2024.
