Warship has coastguard team on board for police duties. Conceivable in Germany too? According to the Navy Times, the USS Sioux City seized more than 20 million dollars worth of cocaine last month. The Coast Guard team on board was able to seize around 1,110 pounds of the drug from a smuggling speedboat in the Caribbean on 19 September. The Sioux City and a Dominican Republic vessel spotted a "very fast boat" that day, whereupon the LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) Sioux City deployed a speedboat and chased after the smugglers. The smugglers were quickly brought under control.

The countries bordering the Baltic Sea have agreed to step up measures to improve the devastating state of one of the world's most polluted marine areas. The aim of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) and the European Commission is to protect 30% of the Baltic Sea by 2030. The new measures were adopted at a ministerial meeting in Lübeck on Wednesday under the auspices of the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), the Commission for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea. It was founded in 1974 and currently has the following members: Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. Shift work, constant time changes and long periods away from their families make life difficult for seafarers and put them under particular physical and mental strain. This is why the German Lutheran Seamen's Mission Foundation is committed to promoting more humanity in seafaring.
