One outcome of the NATO Council of Defence Ministers on 14 and 15 February 2023 is the establishment of a coordination cell for the protection of critical underwater infrastructure. One of the few details from the announcement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was the announcement of the head, retired German Lieutenant General Hans-Werner Wiermann. He was Director General of the International Military Staff at NATO Headquarters in Brussels until July 2022.
