Study: Impact of China's port development projects on the maritime environment

As reported by "The Maritime Executive" at the beginning of December, a study by various US universities shows the dangerous effects for socio-ecological marine systems of the port development projects being aggressively pursued by China, particularly in the Caribbean and around Africa. It is well known that China lures many developing countries into long-term debt through port, power plant and road investments in order to be able to exert intensive influence by acquiring ownership and utilisation rights. New Zealand: It's getting lonely in the South Pacific

New Zealand's navy is quite manageable anyway - two frigates (combat force) and four OPVs (patrol force, 2 large, 2 small), plus three modern support vessels (tanker Aotearoa, multipurpose supply vessel Canterbury, survey vessel Manawanui), that's it! In addition to the unattractive salary for new recruits, the navy has lost a lot of personnel because they migrated to the civilian sector after the military coronavirus support mission. The navy only has one small Lake-class OPV (HMNZS Rotoiti, 350 tonnes) and two recently overhauled OPVs in active status.

But in these times, plans can change quickly. The 45-strong crew of the "Sulzbach-Rosenberg" also had to learn this. Prepared for warm temperatures in the Mediterranean, they were ordered by NATO to return to the...
