When the MUKdo becomes Kijima or Muck Island - the pitfalls of translation

On 27 September 2023, this portal reported on the handover of command of the Naval Support Command (MUKdo) in Wilhelmshaven on 29 September. This was based on a press release from the PIZ Marine dated 26 September 2023, from which dpa certainly also generated its short report dated 29 September 2023 (see below for both links). If you - like the marineforum editorial team - frequently deal with foreign information and sources, you tend to exercise caution when using translation programmes. Especially in the maritime field, things can go wrong! A few days ago, the "Aussiedlerbote" gave a striking example on its website: The message created from the dpa report for the German-Russian...

Korvette Oldenburg: Suddenly everything is different!

The German Navy's corvette "Oldenburg" is currently at sea off the Lebanese coast with a base in Limassol, Cyprus. This makes it the German unit serving in the immediate vicinity of the Palestinian-Israeli flashpoint. For the UNIFIL mission, it first left its home port of "Hohe Düne" in Warnemünde during the "Hanse Sail" in August to move to the eastern Mediterranean. This was not really a particularly heart-warming experience, access marineforum digital+ Are you already a registered user? Pacific Airshow: Flight demonstration of the F-35 Lightning II

Even those who need no more convincing of the flight and manoeuvrability of the single-engine F-35A Lightning II must be allowed to watch this video from this year's Pacific Airshow on 30 September over Huntington Beach in California south of Los Angeles! The U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy are more likely to be flying the F-35B and F-35C, but they are the same aircraft types. The US Air Force pilot, Major Kristin Wolfe, flies this aircraft as if the Swiss physicist and mathematician Daniel Bernoulli (1700 - 1782) had just retired. The high humidity also contributes to the flow of air through the fuselage...

Double change of command in the 2nd FGschw

On Friday, 6 October 2023, a double change of command took place in the 2nd Frigate Squadron. Under overcast skies and in almost autumnal temperatures, Frigate Captain Jan Fitschen (45) was replaced after three and a half years in command of the frigate HAMBURG by Frigate Captain Andreas Schmidt (42), who had previously handed over command of the frigate SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN to Frigate Captain Bastian Saphörster (42). The squadron commander, Captain Olliver Pfenning (48), emphasised the special nature of this double handover in his speeches. On the one hand it was a "burden sharing", on the other a "win-win situation". By this he meant sharing the challenging refit of the SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN as a "type ship" of the F123B class between two commanders...

We are defending Spain. From the sea.

Once again this year, the Armada shows a cross-section of its capabilities in one hundred seconds - short, concise, with strong images. "We are navy" is the title of the world's second-oldest navy with a sense of history and self-confidence (only the Portuguese navy has been in the business a few years longer). Not only because of its 27,000 service posts, but also because of its tonnage, it is the fifth strongest naval force in NATO. Even within Spain, the navy is considered to be the best-equipped armed force on the Iberian Peninsula. Aircraft carriers with helicopters and VSTOL jets, amphibious landing ships with matching land combat forces, frigates and the latest submarines. Well - not superlative, not much of anything, but...
