Maritime security and Africa: a huge task

The Chief of the South African Navy, Vice Admiral Mosiwa Samuel Hlongwane, at the recent Maritime Security Conference held in Simon's Town, described Africa as the final frontier of maritime security and discussed future threats and opportunities, strategies and business opportunities to improve the security of Africa's seas. Illicit arms and drug trafficking, piracy, armed robbery at sea, crude oil theft, maritime terrorism, human trafficking, waste dumping and environmental degradation, unregulated fishing and overfishing are just some of the major threats to Africa's maritime security. These were some of the issues discussed at the 4th Annual Maritime Security Conference (MSC) held in Simon's Town on 12 April....

Simulator for training on the NH90 Sea Lion

Second full-mission simulator for naval aviators The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has ordered a second full-mission simulator (FMS) on behalf of the German Armed Forces to support training on the NH90 Sea Lion naval helicopter. The delivery contract from December 2019 has thus been extended. At that time, the development and delivery of a simulator landscape consisting of an NH90 full-mission simulator, NH90 cockpit procedures trainer, NH90 tactics trainer and NH90 winch and hoist operator trainer had been agreed. Battleship Commander

Paul Stillwell: Battleship Commander. The life of Vice Admiral Willis A. Lee Jr, Naval Institute Press 2021 Unsurprisingly, it took until 2021 to publish the first biography of Vice Admiral Willis A. Lee Jr. who played a key role in the U.S. Navy's Pacific campaign during World War II. Although strongly promoted by Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, only a few sentences about Admiral Lee's work can be found in the work "Seemacht, Eine Seekriegsgeschichte von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart" published by Elmar B. Potter and Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the German version of which was edited by Jürgen Rohwer. Found...

For the sinking of a cruiser

Wrong place, insufficient capability or arrogance? On 15 April, Russia was forced to admit that the missile cruiser "Moskva" had sunk while being towed back to port. The Russian and Ukrainian versions differed, marineforum reported. Will this have consequences for the way naval forces operate and the risks they take? The last time a ship of comparable size to the Moskva was sunk by an enemy force was in 1982, when the Argentinian light cruiser "General Belgrano" was torpedoed by the Royal Navy's submarine "Conqueror" during the ten-day Falklands War. However, this is hardly comparable, because the submarine...
