In demand: Admirals explain the world - Bundeswehr YouTube channel

After Vice Admiral Frank Lenski, Commander of the Fleet and Support Forces and Deputy to the Chief of Naval Operations, was able to convince the audience in the 19th episode of the YouTube series "Nachgefragt" on the Bundeswehr's own channel on the topic of "The naval forces and the war in Ukraine" (see marineforum.online from 15 July 2022, "Navy briefly explained"), it is now the turn of others. "Wangerooge" out of service - soon no more tugs?

The lack of investment in the past also affected the regeneration of the tugs. And now it has happened: The "Wangerooge", in service since 1986, can no longer be operated. The tugboat, which was delivered from the Schichau shipyard in Bremerhaven in 1968, was actually supposed to undergo a final major overhaul at Tamsen Maritim in Rostock and then remain in service until 2025. However, the "premature end of service life" has now been announced. Due to rising costs and hidden damage, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support has announced the end with the approval of the planning office. The navy drew the consequences with an organisational order:...

Russian nuclear submarines in the Skagerrak - on their way to the parade

On Sunday, 31 July 2022, Russia will once again celebrate the anniversary of the Navy in Saint Petersburg. As expected and also announced (see report from 8 July 2022), the two nuclear submarines "Severodvinsk" and "Vepr" were detected coming from the Northern Fleet between Norway and Scotland, entering the North Sea and the Skagerrak, and were accompanied by NATO naval units on their further journey. The first attempt was made by the submarine frigate HMS Portland of the somewhat aged Type 23 (first commissioned in 1991, 4,300 tonnes), which came out of lay-up at Christmas. Fittingly, she was prepared for her operational mission as part of a NATO naval sub-hunting exercise...

The European Patrol Corvette project - déjà vu?

Industrial defence project Naviris, a 50/50 joint venture between the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and its French counterpart Naval Group, and the Spanish state-owned shipbuilding company Navantia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 12 February 2021 to confirm industrial cooperation in the European Patrol Corvette (EPC) project, following the start of the initiative in mid-2019 and a number of consultations. Basically, the initial aim was to pool the labour-intensive and cost-intensive development and design work of the three successful shipyards, which compete in the same market segment but wanted to position themselves more cleverly in the global competition in future. Of course, the navies involved are only too happy to hear this. And now the funding from the European...
