German-Norwegian submarine co-operation

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his Norwegian counterpart Bjørn Arild Gram have laid the symbolic foundation stone for the construction of a submarine maintenance centre at the Haakonsvern naval base. In future, the new 212CD (Common Design) submarines, which the Norwegian and German navies are jointly procuring, can also be maintained here. The shipyard will also house the joint life cycle management office, which will be staffed by personnel from both countries. The first of the new submarines is scheduled to be delivered to Norway in 2029, while the German Navy is expected to receive the first boat of this class in 2032. The Haakonsvern base is located a few kilometres southwest of Bergen and is the most important...

Cyber security in modern harbours

Digital transformation has found its way into ports and shipping, simplifying many processes. With global trade heavily dependent on the integrity of this industry, it is time to give cyber defence its due. The maritime industry, and port operations in particular, are facing a considerable backlog in the area of cyber security. Due to the increasing digitalisation of port activities, the vulnerability of the industry has been exposed by the lack of robust cyber defences, coupled with inadequate incident response planning and a shortage of skilled personnel in the IT and operational technology departments of port authorities. These shortcomings and the critical nature of port operations for...

Baltic Sea: German helicopter shot at?

A German Navy helicopter was presumably shot at with signalling ammunition by the crew of a Russian ship. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) briefly mentioned the incident to the German Press Agency (dpa) on the fringes of a NATO meeting in Brussels. However, she did not give any details. Signalling ammunition is usually only fired in emergency situations. According to dpa information, the incident occurred last week when the helicopter was travelling in the Baltic Sea for reconnaissance. Baerbock had pointed out that there are always ships travelling in the Baltic Sea that are involved in circumventing sanctions due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. The...

Digitalisation leap in marine radio

The world of work is changing rapidly through the use of artificial intelligence. There are many opportunities for its use, especially in the maritime environment. Today's "digital" maritime radio systems are a safety-relevant component and feature tried-and-tested, robust technology that works reliably over long distances. They are therefore essential, as mobile radio networks are no longer available just a few kilometres from the coast. However, connection quality varies depending on the distance between transmitter and receiver and the height of the antennas used, and can be further impaired by local weather conditions. Then there is the "noise" of radios and noisy ship operations from propulsion, cooling and ventilation systems...
