Pioneering technologies for safe shipping

From 3 to 6 September, SMM will once again be a hotspot for the maritime industry. In addition to the main topics of decarbonisation and digitalisation, this year's focus will increasingly be on maritime security. Attacks by Houthi rebels on merchant ships in the Red Sea, geopolitical tensions in the Taiwan Strait, armed attacks by pirates in the Horn of Africa: the many critical security situations worldwide pose enormous challenges for the shipping industry. Martin Kröger, Managing Director of the German Shipowners' Association, rightly demands that the protection of ships and seafarers on the sea routes must be the top priority. The shipowners receive support from naval vessels that...

Welcome on board - the German Navy at the Hanse Sail 2024

From Friday to Sunday, 9 to 11 August 2024, the gates at the naval base on Hohe Düne will open again for the "Open Stützpunkt". It's that time again: Hanse Sail! And what would this traditional event be without the Bundeswehr as an ingredient? But it's not just the navy that is hosting the event, members of the army and air force are also presenting themselves at the Hohe Düne naval base and on the passenger quay in Warnemünde. "... after all, that's my job!" While territorial security was at the forefront during the Cold War, Germany's global responsibility has been at the centre of its foreign policy activities since the mid-1990s. As a populous and economically strong country in the centre of Europe, the Federal Republic of Germany continues to bear great responsibility today. Russia's attack on Ukraine, which violated international law, has brought the Bundeswehr's original mission of national and alliance defence back into the focus of our actions - deterrence and defence are once again the central elements. This requires armed, combat-ready and war-capable naval forces Access marineforum digital+ You are already a registered member of marineforum digital+...

Greece sells its old tonnage

The Greeks are apparently getting out of the Russian oil transport business. The largest ship-owning nation in the world, measured by the carrying capacity of its ships, is obviously profiting more from the lucrative sale of its outdated ships, thereby enabling Moscow to circumvent sanctions at the same time. Greek shipowners are selling their depreciated tankers - mostly 15 to 20 years old - at a profit to mysterious buyers with connections to Russia. A dubious business model: keyword "shadow fleet", but not illegal; and certainly enterprising. And even the EU's 14th sanctions package against Russia from June 2024 will not take action against the shadow fleet. kdk Source:...

For the people

Seafarer's Social Service Oldenburg is the name of the latest support and counselling service offered by the Humanist Association. A team of volunteers looks after seafarers from all over the world at the inland harbour in Lower Saxony. When people go to sea for work, it usually has little to do with the romance of a cruise or a relaxing holiday under palm trees. No, work at sea is hard, full of privation, often monotonous and even more often shockingly poorly paid. Going to sea means constantly roaring diesel engines, small cabins and a life confined to a few square metres on and in steel hulks for months on end. Social contacts? Hardly any. Among ship crews...
