Without free maritime trade there can be no prosperity, without free sea routes there can be no security. Behind these political aspects, however, we must not overlook the fact that we are dealing with extreme logistical, technical and financial dimensions. After three years, Frigate Captain Torsten Eidam has handed over command of the support squadron to Frigate Captain Uwe Lahl. Eidam is moving to the naval command in Rostock to work on the conceptual planning of the navy. With Frigate Captain Lahl, another experienced naval officer is taking over the squadron. He can look back on assignments as commander of a fast patrol boat, deputy commander of the corvette squadron and consultant in the planning department of the Federal Ministry of Defence in Berlin. With the departure of the USS Arleigh Burke from Norfolk on the US East Coast, a change is now in the offing. The Royal Navy has taken delivery of another important building block in the realisation of its strategy to increase the use of autonomous vehicles. The Navy's own innovator NavyX recently officially took delivery of another boat, which will be used to carry out various tests and investigations for a year. The Joint Support Ship (JSS) is one of three ship classes currently being procured by Canada's Navy under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. It is a modified version of the German Berlin class.
