For one operating period

If you look at sea areas far from the North Sea and Baltic Sea, you will almost always find a task force supply ship somewhere. The Bonn can also look back on an eventful operational period with many voyages abroad. Frigate Captain Eike Deußen took command of the youngest ship in Class 702, the Bonn, on 11 December 2020 and immediately began preparations for completing the operational training programme. The tasks and absences have already been written into the ship's calendar. And during this operational period, the tasks were quite demanding. A new Kennedy for the fleet

The USNS Robert F. Kennedy, the newest ship of the US Navy's Military Sealift Command, was christened at a ceremony at the Nassco shipyard of General Dynamics in San Diego, California, at the end of last year. The ship honours Robert F. Kennedy, who was born in 1925 and served as Attorney General in his brother John F. Kennedy's cabinet from 1961 to 1964. Off-the-shelf solution

When ships are older than their crew members and consume huge sums of money in maintenance, it is time for a replacement. As replacements were urgently needed for the salvage and sea tugs, the BAAINBw facilitated the purchase of two used ships - and at the same time expanded the capabilities of the navy. Almost half a century ago, the Bundeswehr last procured ships via the civilian commercial second-hand market. At that time, the RHÖN-class fuel transporters were purchased for use in the former German Navy, which are still in service with the Navy today. Now, this path has been taken once again and two different ocean-going tugs have been purchased on the civilian-commercial market.

On 31 August, the time had finally come: the Commodore of MFG 5, Captain Carsten Holtgreve, reported to the Commander of the Naval Aviation Command, Captain Broder Nielsen. Prior to this, the squadron commander, frigate captain Thomas Richter, had signed off the last two helicopters after they had landed. Scholasticism and the dark sea

The German Navy is still essentially a peacetime navy and the officer corps is hardly tactically orientated. How can this be changed at the doctrinal level? Scholasticism was an important tradition of thought in the Middle Ages, dominated by a rigid insistence on the truth of old texts that propagated a closed world without innovation. It collapsed when the turn of the modern era exposed the scholastics' world view as false. Our country is also experiencing a moment in which a turning point is shaking the world view of political Germany. Our old scholasticism no longer offers us any answers. Germany must think war in all areas in order to become fit for war -...
