Taking global responsibility

In May, the German Navy sets off for the Indo-Pacific for the second time since 2021. The Indo-Pacific Deployment 2024 begins! It will not be a routine voyage. Since the last visit of the frigate BAYERN, the global political situation has changed significantly once again - both in Europe and in Asia. The fact that Germany is sending the frigate BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG and the task force provider FRANKFURT AM MAIN to spend seven months crossing the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans and that the German Air Force is also taking part in exercises in the region with around 30 aircraft is not a matter of course. Close at hand

Comment 50 years ago now, a journey began that not only influenced the course of our German Navy - and later the German Navy - but also strengthened the connection between active and former naval officers through a unique medium - our marineforum. Today, in 2024, we proudly look back on half a century of commitment, discussion and professional exchange. This anniversary not only marks a milestone for marineforum itself, but also for the German Maritime Institute as its publisher, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Abeking & Rasmussen: Vital diversity

For a coffee at Abeking & Rasmussen: On the occasion of 50 years of marineforum, the focus was more on the present and the future. The traditional shipyard on the Weser - motto: The art of shipbuilding - is an advertising customer, readership and companion. And when the editorial team needed specialist support, every piece of research was handled here in Lemwerder. Time to visit our friends on the Weser again. A warm welcome from CEO Matthias Hellmann, born in 1970, former bank manager and strategy consultant. Access marineforum digital+ Are you already a registered user? Now...

Hand in hand across the North and Baltic Seas

The Central Command for Maritime Emergencies and the German Navy work closely together. The aim is to save people and protect the maritime environment. When the freighter VERITY sank in the German Bight on 24 October 2023, the largest rescue operation that the North Sea has seen in recent years began. The VERITY collided with the much larger POLESIE at around five in the morning. Seven seamen were on board. In an operation of this magnitude in German waters, the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies assumes overall command of the operation. In the meantime, more than 20 ships, six helicopters and two aircraft were deployed, coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC)...

Russia's Black Sea Fleet on the defensive

Compared to Russia, Ukraine is a military dwarf. Nevertheless, the country managed to paralyse a once powerful fleet without warships. While Russia's offensive in the Ukrainian war on land continues unabated and is fought there in fierce attacks and counterattacks, the Ukrainian naval forces have only been able to thwart the offensive of the Russian Black Sea Fleet by deploying mobile missile batteries, drones and surface drones, keeping them away from the Ukrainian coasts and forcing them onto the defensive. Since 2023, the Ukrainian naval forces have even gone on the offensive. This indicates fundamental changes and new conceptual approaches to naval warfare in a new era.
