Norway: Six instead of four submarines?

In November 2022, the government asked the Chief of Staff of the Norwegian Armed Forces, General Eirik Kristoffersen, for his recommendation on how national and alliance defence should be organised and equipped in the future. Indonesia: The old "Cottbus" in flames!

Hading Bay-538 is an old Frosch I-class landing ship of the NVA People's Navy, commissioned in 1978 and operated under the name "Cottbus" until reunification. The decommissioned "Cottbus" was then sold to Indonesia in 1993, where it was given the name "Hading Bay" and the hull number 538. It made headlines in the first days of June when a fire broke out on board in the Selayar Strait south of the island of South Sulawesi (Celebes). All 119 crew members (62 crew, 57 embarked troops) were rescued unharmed by naval vessels and civilian freighters in the sea area. According to available information, the fire was extinguished and the ship was towed to a harbour.

During the search, metals, weapon parts and large-calibre ammunition shells were discovered. The captain and crew (32) were subsequently arrested, but have since escaped with the ship. Malaysia accuses the crew of the vessel of illegally salvaging wreckage on the edge of the South China Sea and, in particular, of plundering British warship wrecks from the Second World War. Valuable metals Scrap metals such as steel, copper, aluminium and bronze are valuable. Steel from the period before...

Mortar at sea?

Swedish armed forces award contract for amphibious fire support The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has commissioned Swedish shipbuilder Swede Ship Marine AB to supply eight "seaworthy artillery platforms" for the amphibious battalion in Stockholm and Gothenburg, according to a press release issued by FMV on 17 May 2023. The ships ordered are essentially light patrol boats equipped with stabilised, automatic mortar systems. The ships are intended to provide "indirect fire support with high precision" during coastal and amphibious operations. The vessels will also be equipped with sensors to enable reconnaissance and engagement of land and sea targets, either on land or at sea.
